Currently budget cuts are an on-going threat to the survival of music and art programs in our schools. In fact many teachers and educators, including San Diego, California Superintendent Bill Cova, believe that “It will have an substantial impact on attendance and academic performance with students in K-12 schools all across the nation.”
We have learned from the best scholars and educators that music and art helps to shape children into smarter, more successful adults. So without it what can we do to combat the problem of decreased budgets, teacher layoffs and excluded music and art programs?
To make up for the school enrichment program deficit, something must be done to help preserve and put some ‘pizzazz’ in the classroom. If we expeditiously implement edutainment in the classroom then there may be hope on the rise for our children and their failing education and NAESP’s ‘reshaping’ plan.
Edutainment activist Melvia Miller says, “Edutainment is necessary to uphold effective education and the educational welfare of children in our schools. If sensory activities are implemented while teaching, children can focus better and retain information longer.”
The use of various sensory aids causes positive emotions which translates to more effective learning. Teachers nationwide have been utilizing a number of sensory aids including: Group exercises, Games, Role Playing, Art, Music, Drama, Media, Visual Aids, Audio Aids and any other creative ideas that throw a little excitement into the lesson.

Teachers at Park Dale Elementary School, in Encinitas, California, help students read and write poems with a performance event that parents and family are invited to join.
Students choose a poem they like, then learn about the author and recite the poem on stage with fun masks. Afterwards baked items and veggies, donated by parents are offered to the crowd of proud students and parents and teachers.
It makes for a fun event while building presentation skills and self-confidence. Reading and writing can be a lot of fun when taught with a little edutainment. Information is also retained much longer when lessons are taught with edutainment.
